Style Watch: Timothée Chalamet

Picking a young man for the first in a series about fashion trendsetters might seem like an odd choice, but if you're as big of a fan of Timothèe Chalamet as I am, then you’ll know exactly why I picked him. He, in his so far short career, is already making bolder statements than most A-list male actors you see on the red carpet or in press junket interviews, from his color and fabric choices to the shoes he wears.

He is a self-professed fashion fan - in an interview he did with Frank Ocean for an upcoming issue of VMAN Magazine, he revealed that he styles himself, which is rare for an actor, and goes for designers like Raf Simons (who he wore to the SAG Awards), Hedi Slimane, and Haider Ackermann (creative director of Berluti), who are known for their always cool, always elevated, sometimes androgynous clothing. “Rock stars,” he called them, and if Chalamet keeps on making bold and cool choices, he’ll be a red carpet rock star in his own right in no time.

We’ll start off easy with his really fabulous sweater choices. All three of them are Gucci, but the middle one may be my personal fave because he’s a lamb wearing a lamb sweater. Too cute.
He also has a good eye for jackets. They’re an easy way to make a simple outfit more interesting. Here are some of my favorites:

At the BFI London International Film Festival
Portrait for the 55th New York Film Festival
At the HFPA and InStyle's TIFF Celebration
At the MOMA's screening of Call Me By Your Name

Deep colors like burgundy, navy, and green look great on him, thanks to his dark hair and vampire-ish skin tone. My personal favorite of these jackets is that last one, by Calvin Klein, but I’ll give that first look credit as an ensemble - he looks like a Brooklynite hipster who finally learned how to wash himself. I also have to give him credit for the second to last jacket. It’s off-the-runway Berluti (another designer of whom he seems to be a superfan - thast whole first ensemble is also off-the-runway Berluti), and even though it’s definitely not something to everyone’s taste, his runway model bone structure and build allows him to pull if it off in a way not everyone could.
Now, for what we’re all really here for - the suits.

On Jimmy Fallon (obviously)
At the 2017 Gotham Awards
At the Toronto International FIlm Festival
At the London Film Critics' Circle Awards
At the Oscar Nominees' Luncheon

I love that he went for the checkered pattern on Fallon - it’s casual enough for a suit on a talk show, but still of enough interest that people like me aren’t like “man, why can’t male celebrities put as much effort into their clothes as the women?” He’s also a fan of all velvet suits, like me - this particular one is Berluti (which I believe he has also worn in a dark emerald green), and he also wore a forest green Gucci one to the 2017 LACMA Art + Film Gala. I also have to give major props for how he styles a typical all-black suit. Either it’ll be a thin lapel or single buttoned or with no tie, or he’ll do something like this and put a bold shirt under the jacket. I love this one in particular because it’s a turtleneck!! I love a good turtleneck. The Calvin Klein cowboy boots are also a creative choice that could have gone easily wrong, and yet somehow work. The blue Berluti suit is probably my personal favorite, though - and before people rag on me for the ‘fit problems’ please let me say that, 1) Armie Hammer is having more fit issues here (sorry buddy! You guys look cute together as always though.) and 2) I’m 100% certain that the ‘imperfect' fit is purposeful. Haider Ackermann almost always plays with proportion, and Timothée is lucky enough to have a model’s body type, which means he can pull off that slightly oversized, slightly cuffed cool guy look. The boots finish it off nicely. There’s not much to say about the last look other than he looks extremely sharp and polished in the Gucci ensemble, and is rocking the green, as per usual.

He clearly knows what looks good on him, and I’m excited to see what else he gives us. And even though he still rocks a black suit from time to time, I’m hoping he goes bolder for the Oscars. Now before I sign off on this already very long post, I’ll leave you with an honorable mention - this adorable heart button down he wore on the Late, Late Show with James Corden.

Look at this precious muffin!

  1. Big Feet! lol- he really is so precious. After seeing his acting in CMBYN and Miss Stevens, he's going to be one of Hollywood's leading powerhouses. As in Shakespeare's, the worlds his oyster. May the Gawds protect him, we need more like him.
